About This Dam
Completed in 1986 on the Lakhdar River, Hassan 1er Dam is the tallest embankment dam on the African continent at 145 m, with a 380 m crest. Located 19 km northeast of Demnate in Azilal Province, it sits in a spectacular High Atlas mountain setting. Its 40 MW power station produces 132 GWh annually. It irrigates over 40,000 hectares in the Tadla plains and works in tandem with the downstream Sidi Driss regulating dam.
