About This Dam
Built between 1968 and 1971 with US Army Corps of Engineers assistance, Hassan Addakhil Dam is an 85 m impervious clay core embankment dam on the Ziz River, 10 km from Errachidia. Constructed in response to catastrophic 1965 floods that displaced 25,000 people, it protects the Tafilalet, Morocco's largest palm grove. Its 313 million m³ reservoir stretches 7 km, guarding the entrance to the spectacular Ziz Gorges. The complex includes auxiliary dams, a spillway and irrigation galleries feeding downstream oases.
