About This Dam
Inaugurated on March 20, 1997 by King Hassan II, Al Wahda Dam (formerly M'Jaara) is the largest dam in Morocco and second in Africa. Built between 1991 and 1996 on the Ouergha River, this embankment structure required 28 million m³ of materials and 720,000 m³ of concrete. Equipped with 3 Francis turbines of 80 MW each, it produces 240 MW of hydroelectric energy. Its primary function is flood protection, reducing floods in the Gharb region by 90%, while irrigating over 110,000 hectares of farmland in the Gharb plains. The dam faces the challenge of siltation, losing approximately 60 million m³ of storage per year.
