Most return with extraordinary memories. Some return with sunburn, dehydration, and stories of cold nights they never expected. Understanding Desert Climate

The Sahara's climate is defined by three characteristics that distinguish it from virtually every other environment on Earth: extreme heat, extreme aridity, and extreme temperature variability.

Why the Desert Is Hot

The Sahara receives more direct solar energy per square meter than almost any other place on Earth. Several factors combine to maximize heating.

  • Cloud cover is minimal. Clear skies allow virtually all incoming solar radiation to reach the ground surface, which absorbs up to 90% of this energy and converts it to heat.
  • Low humidity means there is little water vapor to absorb or scatter incoming radiation.
  • Sparse vegetation means there is no evapotranspiration to cool the surface. In a forest, trees release water vapor that absorbs heat energy. In the desert, the ground absorbs the heat directly.

Surviving a Sandstorm

  1. Seek shelter immediately. If you are in a vehicle, stop, turn off the engine, and close all windows and vents. Turn on hazard lights. If in a camp, enter a tent and secure the flaps.
  2. Protect your airways. Cover your nose and mouth with a damp cloth, cheche, or mask. Inhaling sand can cause serious respiratory distress.
  3. Protect your eyes. Wear tight-fitting goggles or wrap-around sunglasses. Contact lenses should be removed if possible, as sand particles can scratch the cornea.

This is the ideal period for Sahara travel. The summer furnace has cooled, but the winter chill has not yet arrived.

  • Daytime temperatures of 28 C to 34 C are warm but comfortable for walking and camel trekking.
  • Nighttime temperatures of 14 C to 20 C are cool but not uncomfortably cold.
  • Sandstorms are infrequent.
  • The light is spectacular: low-angle autumn sun creates deep shadows and rich colors on the dunes.

February to April: The Spring Option

Spring offers comfortable temperatures and the rare chance to see the desert in bloom after winter rain. However, the sandstorm risk increases from March onward.

  • March temperatures are pleasant: 26 C to 32 C days, 10 C to 16 C nights.
  • April begins to heat up significantly.
  • If rain has fallen in winter, desert flowers create a brief, stunning display.

December to January: The Cold Desert

For travelers who want clear skies and solitude, winter offers a unique experience. However, the cold is significant.

  • Daytime temperatures are pleasant at 18 C to 24 C.
  • Nighttime temperatures can approach or reach freezing, especially clear nights with no wind.
  • The sky is extraordinary: winter air is the clearest, and the Milky Way is visible in stunning detail.

May to September: The Warning Zone

The summer Sahara is hostile to human activity. Only experienced desert travelers with appropriate equipment and vehicle support should venture into the desert during these months.

  • June through August temperatures regularly exceed 45 C, with some days approaching 50 C.
  • Even with ample water, heat illness can develop rapidly.
  • Metal surfaces (car bodies, tent poles, zippers) become hot enough to cause burns.
  • Sand temperature at midday can exceed 70 C, making barefoot walking impossible.

Practical Tips for Desert Weather

Hydration

  • Carry a minimum of 4 liters of water per person per day for active desert travel. In summer, 6 to 8 liters may be necessary.
  • Drink before you are thirsty. By the time thirst signals arrive, you are already significantly dehydrated.
  • Add electrolytes. Pure water alone does not replace the salts lost through sweating. Electrolyte tablets or powders are lightweight and effective.
  • Monitor urine color. Pale yellow indicates adequate hydration. Dark yellow or amber is a warning sign.

Sun Protection

  • Full-coverage clothing is more effective than sunscreen alone. Light-colored, loose-fitting long sleeves and trousers reflect radiation and allow air circulation.
  • A cheche (head scarf) protects the head, neck, face, and can be pulled over the nose and mouth during dusty conditions. Buy one in Rissani or Merzouga for a few dirhams.
  • Sunscreen on exposed skin: SPF 50+, reapplied every two hours. The desert UV index routinely exceeds 10.
  • Quality sunglasses with UV400 protection and side shields. Sand glare can cause temporary snow-blindness-like symptoms.

Clothing Strategy

  • Daytime: Light, loose, long layers in natural fabrics or technical synthetics. Light colors reflect heat.
  • Evening transition: Add a fleece or light insulated jacket as the sun sets.
  • Night: Full winter layers for sleeping. A warm sleeping bag rated to 0 C is recommended for winter desert camps. Even in spring and autumn, a bag rated to 5 C or 10 C is wise.
  • Footwear: Closed-toe boots or shoes that cover the ankles. Sand gets into everything, and ankle coverage prevents blisters from sand friction. At camp, lightweight sandals are fine during the day, but closed shoes are safer at night when scorpions are active.

Vehicle Preparedness

If driving in the desert:

  • Carry extra water for both passengers and the radiator.
  • Maintain tire pressure checks. Heat causes tire pressure to increase; the combination of heat, speed, and under-inflation causes blowouts.
  • Carry a shovel and sand mats for extraction from soft sand.
  • Fill fuel before entering desert areas. Fuel stations are scarce south of Errachidia and Ouarzazate.
  • Inform someone of your route and expected return. Mobile phone coverage is unreliable in remote desert areas.

Health Considerations

Heat Illness Progression

Understanding the stages of heat illness can save a life.

  1. Heat cramps: Muscle cramps from salt depletion. Treat with rest, shade, and electrolyte replacement.
  2. Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, headache, cool and clammy skin. Move to shade immediately, hydrate aggressively, and cool the body with wet cloths.
  3. Heatstroke: Core temperature above 40 C, confusion, hot and dry skin (sweating has stopped), rapid pulse. This is a medical emergency. Cool the person by any means available and seek evacuation.

Hypothermia Risk

Less discussed but equally real, hypothermia is a risk during desert nights, particularly in winter and for those who are unprepared.

  • Symptoms: Shivering, confusion, drowsiness, slurred speech.
  • Prevention: Adequate warm clothing, a quality sleeping bag, and a ground mat for insulation from the cold sand.

Scorpions and Snakes

The Moroccan Sahara hosts several venomous species. The fat-tailed scorpion (Androctonus) is particularly dangerous.

  • Shake out shoes and clothing before putting them on.
  • Do not walk barefoot at night.
  • Use a headlamp when moving around camp after dark.
